HPV Test

HPV Test

It is a simple, rapid and reliable test capable of diagnosing the presence of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in the uterine cervix.

Why is it useful to do HPV Test?

HPV testing is recommended:

  • For cervical cancer screening (from age 30)
  • For women with an altered Pap smear, for whom further diagnostic investigations are required (colposcopy, HPV Test)
  • In the follow-up of the treated patients (6/12 months after treatment for HPV-related lesions of the uterine cervix)

    What it analyses

It is possible to choose between three different types of tests, which allow you to:

  • Detecting the presence of HPV and simultaneously identifying 14 high-risk genotypes (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68), including HPV16 and HPV18, which are known as major risk factors for cervical cancer.
  • Simultaneously detect and identify 28 HPV genotypes (including the 14 mentioned above), divided into 20 high-risk genotypes (16, 18, 26, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 53, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68, 69, 70, 73, 82) and 8 low-risk genotypes (6, 11, 40, 42, 43, 44, 54, 61).
  • Assess messenger RNA (mRNA) expression to identify (do not type) mRNA of 14 high-risk HPV genotypes with high sensitivity and specificity (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68).

    F.A.Q. HPV Test

The HPV test is a molecular technique that allows detecting the presence of the viral genome (DNA and/or mRNA), and therefore the presence of infection, sometimes before the cells of the cervix show abnormalities detectable by pap test or biopsy colposcopically guided.

The test is performed on a cervico-vaginal cytological sample obtained with dry swab or thin-layer cytology performed by the gynecologist using the specially provided kit.

The sample taken is analyzed by means of a test which is based on the amplification of HPV DNA and/or the detection of HPV mRNA by «Real-Time» PCR. The test is performed at the Microbiology Laboratory of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli IRCCS di Roma.

The HPV Test report provides answers about the presence/absence of HPV Papilloma Virus. The test results must be interpreted by a medical specialist in light of the patient's clinical picture and other factors.

The test provides three types of answers:

  • a positive response, which indicates the presence of HPV with reference to a specific HPV genotype among the 14 or 28 high and low risk analyzed.
  • a negative response, , indicating the absence of HPV among the 14 or 28 high-risk and low-risk genotypes analyzed.
  • The mRNA test if "positive" indicates that an HPV is integrated into the DNA of the cells of the uterine cervix.
  • The test cannot absolutely rule out an infection with genotypes that cannot be detected by the test.

The price varies according to the type of test performed:

  • HPV 14 genes: €75
  • HPV 28 genes: €95
  • HPV Rna: 80€
  • For the execution of the test, 7 working days are foreseen from when the biological sample arrives at the laboratory.
